English Learners

In the Palmyra-Eagle School District, we work to provide English Learners with resources within their classrooms in order to support their educational needs, with individual pull-out support when indicated.  We offer an inclusive model with supplementary English supports through targeted interventions and accommodations for students who are learning English.  The program’s main objective is to support EL student learning. Academic support is given in coordination with mainstream teachers and for a few students with Special Education teachers. Strong emphasis in the program is given to literacy, vocabulary, writing and core content area skills.

Short-term education goals for EL students are:

  • To make a successful social transition in the classroom setting

  • To understand classroom expectations

  • To acquire vital social and academic vocabulary skills

Long-term education goals for EL students are:

  • To have our ELs take the ACCESS test for measuring ELP levels annually

  • To attain grade-level proficiency in academics

  • To understand U.S. society and culture

  • To become socially successful in the school and community

  • To enable EL students to be career and college ready

EL program goals are:

  • To provide staff development in differentiation and effective instructional strategies

  • To increase coordination between ESL staff and mainstream classroom staff

  • To promote awareness and appreciation of diversity throughout the district
